Gold Award well deserved for Australian teen novel

Oct 2018

The Centre for Youth Literature at State Library Victoria today announced the winners of the 2018 Inky Awards. Australia’s national teen choice prize for young adult literature.

The 2018 Gold Inky was awarded to Paper Cranes Don’t Fly by Peter Vu. The Gold Inky is awarded each year to an Australian author, and includes a cash prize of $2,000.

Peter Vu was only six years old when he was diagnosed with a brainstem glioma. It was after the life-changing experience of his last surgery in Year 10, which led him to write Paper Cranes Don’t Fly. He is currently a student, living in Melbourne with his parents and three siblings, but has ambitions of becoming a full-time writer in the future.

The Silver Inky is awarded each year to an international author. This year’s winner is US-based Angie Thomas for her novel The Hate U Give.
