We caught up with JESS RACKLYEFT to discuss her book Australia: First Colours, a new board book that introduces first colours concepts for babies and toddlers.

What sparked the idea for Australia: First Colours?

After the success of Australia: Country of Colour I was talking to the publisher, Tash about the need for more lovely nonfiction content for younger readers – babies and toddlers. We hatched a plan for a series of four board books based on the art created for this original book, broken into smaller pieces and with less non fiction text.

Where did you get your love of storytelling?

I was born in WA and spent a lot of my childhood in nature – and when I wasn’t swimming at the beach I was reading or drawing. I wasn’t so much as a writer as an illustrator though, and loved telling stories through illustration. I would draw on the weekends, through all my school classes and every day of the holidays – I still find it relaxing and fun.

Do words or images come first for you?

Images come first, and words come (often painfully!) second.

What Australian animals feature in your book?

In this board book series there are many animals to find … Beautiful green fish like the Green Moon Wrasse, a Flame Robin, the striped snake Bandy Bandy. There’s many more!

Do you have a favourite illustration in this book?

I have to say the power of this book is once again from the design, by Kristy Lund-White. She manages to get all my watercolours put together so beautifully. She and I both have a soft spot for the Crimson Rosella.

Who is this book for?

This book is designed for youngest readers who are starting their journey reading, drawing and enjoying nature. I hope it inspires them to get out there and see some of the beautiful plants and animals in our country.
