This oversized book takes us on a tour to meet some of the world’s animals. It’s broken into sections which are Mammals, Birds, Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles and Invertebrates. In each section there are subsections. For example, Reptiles has double page spreads on snakes, tortoises and lizards.

The double page spreads feature a number of animals, each with an image as well as a small amount of simple information, which might include where they live, their characteristics or behaviour.

The animals featured come from around the world including Australia and New Zealand. Australia shines in the parrot section for its wonderfully colourful birds and New Zealand for the curious Kea which can ‘gobble up almost anything’.

Many animals will be well known, such as the various breeds of sharks or whales and the spotted hyena for example. But others not so, such as very long-legged lesser Egyptian jerboa that hides from the scorching sun during the day, coming out at night and making impressive jumps.

This book is oversized which makes looking through the pages more engaging. The central illustrations are large. They draw your eyes around the pages, encouraging you to find the matching text on the edges.

What makes a mammal different, what is an amphibian or an invertebrate? A great book to engage kids in learning about the differences in animal as well as opening their eyes to what an incredibly diverse and beautiful world we all live in.
