Happily Never After captures the lighthearted, fun, whimsy and pure entertainment of a mid-2000’s romantic comedy. Lynn Painter is a master at balancing sweet and swoon-worthy chemistry, delightful characters and laugh-out-loud humour.
The book follows Sophie who calls upon the help of a handsome stranger named Max to interrupt her wedding ceremony and confront her cheating partner. Finding joy in revenge, Sophie and Max team up to object at other weddings to expose cheating partners. Yet the more time they spend together ruining weddings, the stronger their feelings for each other become.
This whole premise is incredibly fun and enjoyable. I loved how cynical Sophie was when it comes to love and romance. This makes the tension and chemistry between her and Max more intense, and that made me hooked. What makes the romance between the two main characters more endearing is how it develops from a friendship. The dialogue and descriptions that come with Sophie and Max growing closer are excellent. It feels natural and is filled with plenty of charm, building their relationship perfectly. Sure, it’s fun to blush and giggle when two romantic leads get together, but you’ll feel all warm and giddy in your heart with the way Painter writes Sophie and Max’s friendship.
There’s an atmosphere of fun and amusement within the pages of this book, so if you are looking for a book that will leave you with the biggest grin on your face, this one is it. Side note, it’s perfectly paired with Taylor Swift’s Speak Now album.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Obscure facts that might make her sound interesting (but probably don’t):
*She is the step-aunt to one of the actors on Riverdale, even though she’s technically only met him once and he likely wouldn’t remember her. Hint: He starred in a movie with Yara Shahidi. And another one with Will Smith. His name rhymes with Barles Gelton.
*She can fit an entire cupcake in her mouth. BOOM.
*She once saw Kelsey Grammar hailing a taxi in Manhattan, so she’s pretty much an NYC native who is best friends with celebrities.
*If you see her doing anything crafty, it isn’t her; she has literally set things on fire with a hot glue gun and has the motor skills of a preschooler. No offense, preschoolers.
*She held the record at her elementary school for finding the most bats (vampire, not baseball) in a single year. The little dork located – and alerted authorities to – four potentially-rabid bats.*
