Alice Oehr is an acclaimed graphic artist. Her first book, Off to the Market, gave kids a tour of what you can buy at the markets. In this new book she’s taken her inspiration from the pantry and the fridge.

From the beginning, each page features a letter of the alphabet and highlights yummy foods that start with that letter. It’s not just the common carrots and mango that get a guernsey here. There is a terrific variety including jalapenos, warrigal greens and quandongs.

The foods are not just fruits and veges either, with ravioli, pretzels and kimchi making appearances. I love the huge range of delicious foods that can be introduced to children that they might be encouraged to try. Nashi pears, halloumi, alphabet pasta. It makes it all the more interesting and opens their minds to the huge variety out there with all their different textures and tastes.

Oehr’s illustrations are bright and full of the colours of all the different types of foods. Artichoke to Zucchini is a clever alphabet book that provides temptation and inspiration for some future foodies.
