Mama didn’t really want to get chickens. She says, ‘They’re noisy and they poop everywhere!’ But when they arrive, she changes her mind. She even has a favourite, which she names Chooky La La. She sits and watches them, enjoying their habits and personalities.
But things change when Mama starts to lose her memory. She sometimes even forgets the chickens’ names. But the chickens don’t mind.
Even when Mama forgets where she is going they would still follow her. Mama still always makes sure they are safe and well fed at bedtime. Every day she finds ways to show her family and the chooks how much she loves them.
The author, Michelle Worthington, has used her own experiences of early onset dementia to write this book to help other families in the same situation. To know that even though there is a loss of memory, the person still loves you and cares for you just the same.
This book is so important for families in this situation, to help support children through a clever story.
Mama’s Chickens is a beautifully illustrated book that I highly recommend. A sensitively told and moving story that explores a reality for many families.
