Sally Thorne is one of my favourite romance writers. Her female leads are smart, her ability to build the romantic tension is 10/10 and her dialogue is always snappy and hilarious. Her latest is a historical rom-com reinterpretation of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein.

Angelika Frankenstein lives in a desolate old mansion with her brother, Victor. Victor is a brilliant scientist determined to beat his nemesis and be the first to successfully reanimate the dead. But Angelika is no timid sidekick. She’s brilliant in her own right and dreams of travelling the world and having her own adventures. But this isn’t easy when you’re still unmarried at the ripe old age of 24. More than anything, she dreams of finding true love.

Enter two corpses, a stormy night and a successful experiment and Angelika Frankenstein indeed meets her match, in the form of a handsome man who has no memory of his previous life. And while there is tension brewing between these two, there is also drama unfolding.

Will refuses to act on his feelings until he knows about the life he left behind, and the only thing Angelica knows about his previous life is that he was wearing a wedding ring. Unfortunately, that ring is now on the body of another Frankenstein-man who was also reanimated that stormy night, but with much less success. As Victor scrambles around the countryside searching for his wild creation, Angelica seeks to uncover Will’s past.

Author Sally Thorne

There’s a cast of quirky characters which round out the story and give it more fun and depth than your usual romance. The banter and tension between them is classic Sally Thorne but it’s the feminist take on this classic story that I really liked. Angelica is smart, knows what she wants and isn’t waiting around for her Prince Charming … she’s making him, and rescuing him.
