It’s a lovely sunny day by the seaside. The water is a beautiful shade of blue with little waves lapping on the seashore. People are taking walks, chasing each other, even whistling a happy tune. But under the sea, deep down under the sea, lives Blobfish, all alone. He’s been trying to tell himself jokes but even the Knock, Knock jokes don’t seem to work. He needs a friend. So Blobfish decides to take a swim. But while he’s swimming, people on the beach are talking, eating and playing, and somehow an errant plastic bag splashes into the water. ‘A friend,’ thinks Blobfish, ‘This is fun.’
But it’s the wrong sort of friend! Blobfish could be in trouble!
On the surface, this is quite a humorous story. Blobfish is really just a blob, with a pink body, little black eyes, a large nose and a very large mouth to go with it. But as we read on, he becomes so real. We understand the danger of the plastic bag and we want to save him.
His story sends a message to all of us to look after our oceans especially where plastics are concerned.
This is a perfect book to discuss important issues with your children.
