Whale has now been waiting nearly a year for the birth of her calf. She has come thousands of kilometres from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef. This is where her little calf will be born, tail first, and taking his first breath as he struggles to the surface. He’ll swim along with his mum sinking below her whenever he needs to have a feed. But, best of all, Calf loves to snuggle close to his mum, under the winter sun.
But now as winter is nearly over it’s time for all the whales to start their very long migration back to the Antarctic waters. Calf and his mum enter the Southern Ocean and finally reach those calm waters of Antarctica. But there are still dangers here. Killer whales work together to separate the little calves from their mothers. Please keep close to your mum, little Calf.
Not only is The Voyage of Whale and Calf a book where you can’t help falling in love with the soft and dreamy illustrations on every page, but at the back of the book there are many more facts which will blow your mind about these incredible and magnificent mammals. I’m just about to turn the pages again.
