Beyond Belief is set in Paris during World World II. It follows a young boy named Ruben who is forced to hide in a Muslim mosque during the midst of the Nazi’s rule and their search for Jews. It explores Ruben’s struggles fitting into a different community and the rituals of this religion he is forced to be part of. The story is also about his desperation to be united with his family again.
I was fascinated with the plot line, characters, their backstories, and the difficulties Ruben experiences adjusting. I would have liked more information about World War II, which I think would have helped me connect better to the setting and understand Ruben’s situation more.
I would recommend Beyond Belief to historical fiction fans and those who have an interest in novels based on true stories. I would also recommend it to someone who is looking for an easy and entertaining book.
