In 2016, Meghan met Harry. They fell in love, married and, in 2020, moved to Hollywood. Many people blamed Meghan for dragging Harry away from his family and his duties. Finding Freedom is an unauthorised biography that tells the story behind these four basic facts.
Carolyn Durand – a journalist who reported on the Royals for 15 years – and Omid Scobie – Royal correspondent – have interviewed widely to discard the lies, exaggerations and hubris and present the truth.
Harry has often confessed he wished he was just a normal guy. He’s different from his brother, William, who takes after his orderly and pragmatic granny, the Queen. Meghan is confident and self-assured. Although repeatedly warned that the British tabloids will ‘tear you apart if there’s any hint of Harry marrying an American, a bi-racial and a Hollywood actress’, she thought it could be successfully handled.
She was wrong. Meghan was distressed by paparazzi lurking and unflattering articles written about her that were often untrue with racial overtones. She had difficulty accepting the Royal mantra: never complain; never explain. She found it starting to affect her mental health.
Unless there’s a dreadful catastrophe, Harry is unlikely to become monarch. No-one should be expected to be shackled with the chains of Royalty just because they are born a Mountbatten-Windsor.
