Impossible Music follows Simon, a teenage boy obsessed with listening to, and creating, music. His life changes in an instant when he suffers a stroke that renders him completely deaf. Refusing to learn sign language or seek counselling, he instead tries to find a way to make music once again. Along the way he meets G, who is also struggling with her newfound deafness.

Impossible Music doesn’t portray deafness as the end of the world, but also doesn’t sugar-coat the experience. It presents a very real and raw story of learning to adapt to losing a major part of you, while simultaneously navigating the pitfalls of adolescence.

The novel also presents an unusual concept that challenges the very definition of music. In essence, it explores the idea that music is not just aural; it can be experienced in an array of different ways. I found the book very convincing of the idea that music, an art form meant to be shared, can be experienced by everyone, and doesn’t discriminate based on the ability to hear.

Overall, Impossible Music is a great book. It’s a realistically told story filled with strongly written characters you can’t help but care about. The language is poetic yet straightforward, and it provides insight into Simon’s mental state without becoming too overbearing. Williams also includes musical terminology throughout, which isn’t difficult to follow. Whether you’re an aspiring musician, a virtuoso like Simon or even someone who is just dabbling in the creation of music, this book is a highly recommended read.
