Tiny has been living on the streets of Sydney for months. She probably wouldn’t have survived if old Zak hadn’t taken her under his wing. Zak has been on the streets for years, so he knows where to find shelter and free food. He takes Tiny to the Hope Lane Shelter. Tiny isn’t from Sydney; it’s just where her car finally died after driving it away from her troubles. She joins the creative writing agroup at Hope Lane because there’s always afternoon tea there.
Nola has a good home, even if her parents are unconventional. She has been sent by her school to Hope Lane to work as a volunteer. She’s overwhelmed by the smell and terrified of the residents. But she loves to write, so she agrees to help with the writers’ group. There she meets Tiny, and the two become friends.
Pip Harry takes us on an emotional journey that is disturbing yet satisfying. This tender, honest and challenging book is about mental illness, homelessness and the ghosts of our cities: the forgotten people who wander the streets without home, purpose or a voice that is heard. It’s also a book of hope. There are good people who give up their time and their resources to help. If only there were more places like the Hope Lane Shelter.
