This dark fae romantasy is a beautifully crafted story that blends vivid description with complex relatable characters.
The narrative explores a fraught family dynamic and the relationship between two very different sisters, separated when one chooses to run away with the fairies. This sets off a haunting quest into the unknown, where their loving bond is tested and fiercely protected.
Sabrina has always believed the stories of the world hidden in the woods to be mere myth, she is willing to sacrifice her life and to safeguard and possibly rescue her sister, Ceridwen.
Along the way, she faces setbacks and dangers that impede her progress, and the unfolding journey is gripping, particularly when she encounters ominous yet disarming acquaintances. Sabrina’s resilience, self-discovery, and struggle to survive are both compelling and inspiring.
Fiteni enables readers to vividly experience her tale, weaving in elements of Welsh folklore that adds depth and enriches the world. While some of the translations briefly disrupted the flow for me, the novel exudes authenticity, and this cultural grounding offers a refreshing contrast to other fantasy novels. The slow-burning, mysterious romance that emerges is absorbing, filled with deceptive appearances and painful truths.
I recommend this novel to readers seeking a new adventure in an evocative, unfamiliar world of magic, love, and deception.
