For five years running, Gavin McCormack has been recognised by The Educator magazine as one of Australia’s Most Influential Educators. After reading Raising Resilient Children, I now appreciate why.

It is written in an intelligent and approachable style. McCormack shares professional wisdom with relevant anecdotes and life experiences. The ‘7 STEPS’ relate to modelling suitable behaviour, seeing children as whole human beings (not just the source of test scores and school grades), and connection with other students, teachers, parents and the broader community. The ideas that explore ‘making learning real’ resonate by ‘connecting what we teach in the classroom and at home to what’s happening in society’.

His ideas are supported by academic literature, breakout boxes (with facts, scenarios and case studies), historical quotes and questions asked directly of readers (typically parents and educators). The central role of student voice, agency and capability are constant themes, strengthened by insights on the neuroscience of learning and redefining educational success.

McCormack believes that ‘Learning shouldn’t just be about memorising facts for exams but engaging with the world in ways that spark curiosity and a desire for continuous learning.’ Raising Resilient Children evokes reflection on the purpose of education and the fundamental idea of children thriving when they feel acknowledged, appreciated and understood. The book’s inspiring, relatable approach is thought provoking, relevant and practical.
