Martin Cruz Smith, acclaimed author of the Arkady Renko thrillers, dies at 82

Gorky Park by Martin Cruz SmithMartin Cruz Smith, best known for his gripping series of thrillers featuring Russian detective Arkady Renko, has died.

His breakout novel, Gorky Park, became an instant bestseller upon its release in 1981. Set in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the novel introduced readers to Renko, a Moscow homicide investigator navigating the murky waters of politics and crime. The book was later adapted into a feature film in 1983.

Cruz Smith continued Renko’s story in Polar Star and Red Square, among several other sequels, cementing the character’s place in crime fiction history.

Over his career, Smith twice received the Dashiell Hammett Award from the North American branch of the International Association of Crime Writers, a testament to his mastery of the genre.

Born Martin Smith, he adopted the name ‘Cruz’ – his paternal grandmother’s surname – after his agent advised him to distinguish himself from other writers with the same name.

Smith passed away from Parkinson’s disease at a senior living community in San Rafael, California.
