This picture book is based on the Murchison meteorite that fell near Murchison, Victoria, in 1969.

Lucky lives on a farm. She was busy milking the cows when there was a ‘crackling, fizzing, whipping and whizzing’ and a bright fireball shot across the sky.

When it landed there was a big BA-BOOM! The cows got a terrible fright, and the house shook on its foundations. At Lucky’s feet was a hissing rock.

‘Hello little star,’ she said. The rock was warm and stinky as she put it in her pocket.

What fell from the sky was a meteorite and it had caused quite a stir in the town, sprinkling rocks from the size of coins to bricks. Emergency services swing into action and a team of science students arrive with their professor to investigate. Lucky watches them working and learns that the rocks are rarer than moon rocks. As the story is told we also learn along with Lucky about this unique meteorite.

Lucky keeps her star in a jar. But she wonders, ‘If a star falls, does it leave an empty space in space?’ So, she sets herself the task of finding a way to her little star back in the sky.

This picture book is based on the Murchison meteorite that fell near Murchison, Victoria, in 1969. In the back of the book is more information about the meteorite; why it fell, where scientists believe it came from, what makes it so special.

Lucky’s Star adds to Mark Greenwood reputation as a ‘history hunter’ with over 30 previous books to his name for younger readers, many award winning, and also with a history bent.

This book would make a great addition to your library.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m a history hunter. I enjoy searching for lost explorers and glittering treasures, delving into mysteries and solving famous cold cases. I also have a passion for rocks and minerals, fossils and meteorites. Most of all, I love sharing my curiosity and the stories I find. My books have won numerous awards and have taken me on exciting journeys of discovery.

Our history is recorded in ancient rock art, in the flag flown at the Eureka Stockade, by Burke and Wills’ tree. All around our coastline history unfolded in shipwrecks and ship arrivals. Sometimes tragic, often regrettable, always formative, history is commemorated from Tasmania and throughout the mainland at the sites of prisons and massacres. From the birthplace of a new federated nation at the beginning of the twentieth century in Sydney’s Centennial Park to Eddie Mabo’s struggle for acknowledgement of land rights in the 1990s, history happened all around Our Country.
