Twenty years ago, Sami, a young man with a promising future in medicine, headed to the Spanish Riviera with some friends for his gap year. When an innocent hook-up with a young woman turned deadly, Sami ends up fleeing Spain to avoid the Spanish Police. Sami can’t remember much of what happened, he only knows that he would be blamed.

As confusion and anxiety continue to follow Sami, his life is a mess. He doesn’t go to med school, instead eventually becomes a police detective. Falling even further down life’s ladder, he was fired from this job and is now a sketchy private investigator, teaching night classes to would-be sleuths in New York City. Until one fateful night … a ghost from 20 years ago appears.

The beautiful woman at the back of his class brings the memories of Spain flooding back. Upon eye contact, Sami knows she holds all the answers he has been searching for but as he goes to talk to her, she bolts. Sami must fight to solve the impossible mystery that has so affected and haunted his every waking moment for 20 years. What he begins to uncover is a story with huge secrets, hooks and twists galore. Secrets that perhaps should remain buried.

Harlan Coben never disappoints but this book brought reader enjoyment in spades. I love how he is current and on point in all things from language usage to pop culture references, as well as reflecting how the diverse groups of people that show up in his books are a true cross-section of society today.
